چکیده

Recent studies on grasslands demonstrate that species losses and subsequent changes in diversity can decrease the resilience (recovery ability) of ecosystems after a disturbance and can alter ecosystem functioning (e.g., productivity). These studies also explain that responses of ecosystems to enUtah State University; Department of Fisheries and Wildlife and The Ecology Center, 5210 Old Main Hill, Logan, UT 84321-5210. We conducted an experiment with 220 wetland mesocosms in summer 1998 to test whether species richness or presence of specific species of submersed aquatic plants (Potamogeton pectinatus L., Potamogeton nodosus Poir., Potamogeton crispus L., Zannichellia palustris L., and Ruppia maritima L.) affect the resilience of macrophyte above-ground biomass and total ecosystem respiration after disturbance (clipping). Neither respiration or final biomass were affected significantly by macrophyte species richness. Species richness also did not have a significant effect on the resilience of macrophyte biomass and system respiration. In contrast, the presence of specific species had significant effects on macrophyte biomJ. Aquat. Plant Manage. 39: 36-39

Species Richness, Evenness and Plant Community Stability 22 Years after Ploughing a Semiarid Rangeland

Rangeland ploughing and cultivation using dry land farming crops may be amajor reason for the destruction of natural resources in the semiarid and sub-humid regionswhich may significantly change the composition and reduce the stability of the affectedcommunities. In present research, an abandoned ploughed site was compared with a nearbyreference site in the semiarid rangelands of Baharkish, Quc...

Hydrological disturbance overrides the effect of substratum roughness on the resistance and resilience of stream benthic algae

1. Habitat heterogeneity in lotic systems is usually associated with the availability of refuges. Heterogeneous habitats (here, rough substrata) should mediate the effect of high-flow disturbances by protecting benthic algae, thus increasing the resistance and resilience of the system. Additionally, the ability of algae to resist a disturbance and recover after it should be dependent on biologi...

Relationship between invertebrate traits and lateral environmental gradients in a Mediterranean river-fl oodplain

The aim of the present study was to describe the relationships between macroinvertebrate traits and lateral hydrological and environmental gradients in a Mediterranean river-fl oodplain, from the main river channel to three disconnected fl oodplain wetlands. Bimonthly water and macroinvertebrate samples were collected from an array of riverine wetlands in the Ebro River in northeast Spain. Our ...

OP IN ION ART ICLE Leveraging nature’s backup plans to incorporate interspecific interactions and resilience into restoration

Interspecific interactions are important structuring forces in ecological communities. Interactions can be disturbed when species are lost from a community. When interactions result in fitness gains for at least one participating organism, that organism may experience reduced fitness as a result of interaction disturbance. However, many species exhibit traits that enable individuals to persist ...

Managed disturbance enhances biodiversity of restored wetlands in the agricultural Midwest

We compared plant diversity in four restored and four natural wetlands in the glaciated interior plains to evaluate how quickly plant biodiversity develops following cessation of agriculture and reintroduction of wetland hydrology. After approximately ten years, restored wetlands had plot and site richness comparable to natural wetlands; 6.2 + 0.5 species per plot and 33.8 + 2.3 species per sit...
